May 29, 2018 Composition and mixing instructor John Davies takes us through the basics of GarageBand for an introduction to the world of music production using one of the easiest, most streamlined DAWs.
GarageBand is one of the few apps that come close to providing a complete music studio experience on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. What’s interesting is that it already comes pre-installed with every new Mac device.
Additionally, you do not need to be a pro to start using the app. This also means you can start remixing your favorite music in no time. If you are having difficulties remixing tracks, here’s how you can make it possible:
Start Remixing the Easy Way
If it is your first time using GarageBand, you might find the app to feel a bit more complicated than it actually is. What’s really interesting about the app is that it is incredibly user-friendly. After getting a knowhow of the basics, you will be able to use its features to create new audio tracks on your own. That’s not all, it’s also packed with incredible features to remix, manipulate and loop tracks.
But since it’s your first time, let’s go about remixing tracks the easy way:
After launching the app, select Empty Project.
Since you are going to be working on existing tracks and soundtracks, select Software Instrument from the screen which shows up.
You will be presented a workspace where you can begin editing, and mixing your tracks. On the top right side of the screen you will find three icons. Select the third icon to access your music library on iTunes.
You will gain access to a Media pane on the right side of the screen.
Under GarageBand, click on iTunes. A dropdown menu will emerge, giving you access to Music files, Movies, Music and Home Videos.
By selecting Music you will be able to access any song or music available on iTunes. You can select any track from the description box below the Media pane.
After locating the track from the Media library, click on the track to access it’s timeline in GarageBand’s editing pane.
You can duplicate the track by selecting it and pressing the Command and D keys simultaneously on your keyboard.
Highlight the areas that aren’t required, select Edit and click Delete.
You can also paste portions of the same track by highlighting the required areas and then selecting Cut from the Edit menu. The portion can then be pasted by selecting Paste from the Edit menu.
You can move and manipulate portions of the track. It actually is as simple as clicking and dragging the required portions in the timeline.
You can add drum and keyboard loops to the duplicated track. This is possible by selecting a loop from the toolbar. Any loop can simply be dragged and dropped into the track timeline. The procedure needs to be repeated several times to add as many loops as you like.
You can test your audio track by pressing the space bar. Doing so will play or pause your music. This gives you the chance to fix mistakes or portions that seem out of place.
Once you are done, you can save the project by accessing the File menu and clicking on Save. However, you also have the option to export the audio file by selecting Export from the same menu. This will actually create a master file with all the adjustments you have made into a single file which can then be played on any music player.
Keeping the aforementioned steps in mind, you should now be able to remix your tracks easily than ever before. However, there are many more effective ways of remixing tracks with GarageBand. Depending on your experience, you can use each feature to come up with a spectacular remix. However, this is only possible if you are enthusiastic and determined about learning everything there is to know about the app and becoming a master at using it.
Give Your Favorite Music an Extreme Makeover
You can give your favorite music or songs an extreme makeover with GarageBand. This gives you the opportunity to do more than just add loops or manipulate portions of the track. After finding a suitable track, you can import it in GarageBand and alter the track by:
Experimenting with different instruments for each audio track.
Altering the current form of the song by adding an intro or an outro for better results.
Creating different moods by experimenting with the tempo of the audio track. For example, you could decrease the tempo of a fast song.
You could mix or double a track with complimentary sounds. For instance, a flute could complement a guitar.
These ideas should give you a better understanding of GarageBand’s true potential. You can practice and experiment with each feature to get the type of music you originally wanted.
Creating a Remix from Stems
While searching for remixes online, you may have come across thousands of remixes for Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye. If you are wondering how that’s possible, it’s not that complicated. What’s really interesting about Gotye is that he is one of the artists who offers the original ‘stems’ of their best known songs for others to remix.
Now the real question here is what are stems? How do they help you make remixes of already remixed tracks? Well it’s quite simple. These stems are audio tracks from the original recordings which include the bass, lead vocals, keyboards, and so on. So, when you have the original stems to experiment with, you can approach a remix in so many different ways. One of the best ways of coming up with your own remix is by studying and listening to each of these stems carefully. This allows you to identify those sections that you would like to use in your own remix.
Keeping this in mind, creating a remix from stems is not as difficult as it may seem. After locating stems of the songs you love, you need to find a beat-map to match each stem. You will have to import each audio file individually and ensure they synchronize to the metronome beat. Doing so will save you a lot of time and is crucial if you want to add your own loops.
You have to keep in mind there is no right or wrong when it comes to remixing your favorite music. You need to have a plan and you need to stick to it. But what’s even more important is the feel of the music is just right and sounds perfect to you. As long as you are having fun, it doesn’t actually matter and besides you can always make amends later. While remixing stems from your favorite song, the following tips could help:
Introduce a beat based on your own style. If it proves to be difficult, you can stick to an existing stem or you could incorporate a beat from another stem or loop altogether. However, it is a good idea to create a beat to work with. You can always make the necessary changes later on.
Consider using short musical phrases or you can simply add loops or stem snippets into your audio track.
At times, overlapping and repetition can work well for you.
There’s no reason why you should not change the order in which the instruments are playing. Don’t be afraid to mix it up. There’s always room for improvement.
You can enhance an existing song by adding your own instruments. These can be incorporated into your own remix. You always do have the option to record your sessions on an electric guitar or MIDI keyboard with GarageBand.
Using suitable effects where necessary is a good idea. Make sure they don’t seem out of place.
Once you are done remixing your favorite song, you can export the final version in any format you desire. These audio tracks can then be shared with family and friends to get valuable insight on what you may have missed out on. Additionally, there’s no harm in asking others for help. As creative as you may be, others can have great ideas which could potentially enhance the overall impact of the song. However, you also do have the option to look for ideas from other sources. You can start going through remixes online to get a better idea of what you want and come up with a unique blend which is innovative and has the makings of an instant hit.
Conclusion
Garageband
GarageBand is the perfect app for aspiring musicians or artists looking to leave their mark on the music industry. Regardless of what others tell you, there’s no harm in giving it a shot. Considering the fact you do not need to pay for a recording studio to start creating your own music, there’s no harm in giving GarageBand a try. What’s even more interesting is that you will be able to create studio-quality soundtracks from the comfort of your home. If that’s not enough, the internet should satisfy your need for original stems. You can use stems from other songs and incorporate it into your own tracks to come up with mashups of your own. The possibilities are endless, as long as you are willing to explore your options and may end up with a popular remix of your own in no time.
Creating a mix of a song with iLife’s GarageBand ’11 isn’t always complicated. You may simply need to raise or lower the volume of the individual tracks by using the track volume sliders. If it sounds good after doing so, you’re well on your way to finishing the mix. However, you may need to refine the volume for each track to create a good mix by setting the pan position for each track and setting automation curves for settings.
Setting the volume and pan position when mixing tracks in GarageBand ’11
The volume for each track can be raised or lowered so that you can achieve a balance of sound across all tracks. You can drag the track’s Volume slider in the track header to the left to lower the track’s volume, and to the right to raise it.
In addition, you can place the sound for each track in the stereo field with the pan wheel in the track header. Drag counterclockwise to pan to the left channel, or clockwise to pan to the right — the wheel’s white dot indicates the position. Option-click the pan wheel to return it to the center position.
Drum and bass tracks are typically set to the middle (balanced between the left and right stereo fields), and vocals, lead instruments, and supporting instruments and vocals can be put in either channel.
Setting automation curves for settings when mixing tracks in GarageBand ’11
Sound is fluid, and by controlling the ebb and flow of the volume and other settings for a track, you can work wonders to improve a song. GarageBand ’11 provides an automation curve for controlling the track volume, track pan, and automated mixing settings over the duration of a song. You can raise or lower the volume of a track at specific points to simulate a crescendo or decrescendo, to make specific tracks fade in or out, or even to hide a bad note by lowering the volume in the track at that moment.

Click the Curves (triangle) button in the track header, and choose Track Volume from the pop-up menu. Send garageband files from iphone to ipad.
Click the line to create several points, and then drag each point to define a curve.
A setting of 0 indicates even volume, dragging up into positive numbers increases volume, and dragging down into negative numbers decreases volume. The volume changes evenly between points on the volume curve, providing smoother volume control for the track.
Click and then drag a point on the automation curve for Track Volume.

Setting an automation curve for Track Pan works in the same way as the Track Volume curve works. Just choose Track Pan from the pop-up menu. As you drag the curve, the 0 setting is the middle, dragging up into positive numbers pans to the right channel, and dragging down into negative numbers pans to the left channel. The pan changes evenly between points on the curve, providing smoother pan control for the track.
